I am an Assistant Professor and Internist in the Department of Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center. My research to date has focused on clinical inertia and barriers to cardiovascular disease guideline implementation in patients with depression and anxiety disorders. I have also used computer simulation models to examine the health impact and cost effectiveness of hypertension guideline implementation. I am particularly interested in designing innovative and cost-effective studies that seek to improve cardiovascular disease guideline implementation in resource limited primary care settings with a high prevalence of comorbid depression.

As a primary care physician, I work with a predominantly Hispanic, Medicaid population with high rates of depression and medical comorbidities. I have seen first-hand how depressive symptoms can markedly affect the quality of life, adherence and cardiovascular disease outcomes of my patients. I have often found it difficult to navigate convoluted psychotherapy referral processes and to optimize my patients’ cardiovascular disease risk factors. However, I’ve also seen lives drastically improved with behavioral interventions that have been shown to be effective but poorly disseminated. These experiences have shaped my career and desire to find innovative ways to implement effective screening and treatment interventions in underserved environments. I think systems level thinking will be the key to improving healthcare outcomes.
