Sye-Ok Sato, MA, joined the Center for Vulnerable Populations (CVP) in July 2022 as the Project Manager on Dr. Margot Kushel’s HOPE HOME Study. Sye-Ok is both a Pacific Northwest (Oregonian) native, and California (proud Oaklander) resident for close to two decades now.
Sye-Ok has made it a priority in her research endeavors to give a voice to communities that are often overlooked, including the homeless and drug users. Sye-Ok comes to CVP with both experience and passion for implementing creative research processes that will ultimately provide meaningful and actionable findings. Sye-Ok’s previous role was as the evaluator on three SAMHSA grants focused on providing care to the homeless, pregnant women and their children engaged in residential substance treatment, and patients in need of medication assisted treatment. Sye-Ok is particularly interested in the role of medical institutions as gatekeepers, and how to alleviate stigma in healthcare settings.
Comedy and fitness are Sye-Ok’s favorite methods of self care and medicine. She enjoys laughing at stand up comedy and attending her group fitness lagree classes in Berkeley. She often frequents the Roxie Theater in San Francisco to catch art house cinema films with a bag of popcorn and M&Ms.
